![]() ![]() ![]() Plant Based Milk – This plant milk can be your choice, I used an unsweetened plain almond milk. But if using fresh mushrooms, saute with the onion, celery, and carrots before adding to the dish. If using the canned, drain before adding to the dish. Mushrooms – I have used both canned and fresh mushrooms for this recipe. These fresh vegetables can be added to the dish raw or they also can be sauteed before adding to the dish. I also added fresh chopped celery, onion, and carrots. If using frozen, cook up the vegetables before adding to the dish and if adding canned, drain the vegetables. Vegetables – In this dish, I add frozen corn and green beans, but canned will work just as well. You serve this dish as soon as it comes out of the oven, this is a hot dish (get it?) for the family.Īs I said above, I never call any hotdish a casserole, but then we all can argue over whether it is grey duck or goose. One of the main reasons is that it’s just a simple name for a simple meal that’s tossed together and thrown into the oven for the family. Let me help you all understand the reasons I believe Minnesotans call these dishes a hotdish and not a casserole. I am not sure if there is a certain era that this term, hotdish came or started from, but it did originate in the Upper Midwest of the United States. This is why I never say the word casserole when referring to a hotdish, even if the recipe is for a casserole, it just does not sound right. The casserole usually is made as a lighter side dish, where as the hotdish is made as the heavier main dish, but of course if you live in Minnesota it’s all just Hotdish. Most of the time I have made this hotdish vegetarian, but after some experimenting, I have finally come up with a vegan version.Ī Hotdish and a casserole are similar, but there is a slight difference. They have used different meats, condensed soups, cheeses, and veggies. ![]() I have lived in Minnesota all my life, I have had and made countless varieties of this comfort meal. The abundant fruits and vegetables, such as apples, squash, and pumpkins.Īnd of course, throwing together a dish and heating up your families’ favorite hotdishes for a filling meal! The cooler nights for restful sleeping, and finally pulling out those sweatshirts and sweaters. Not to mention the brilliant bright colors of the changing leaves and the crisp autumn air. This is one of the reasons I look forward to fall in Minnesota! You will see this dish served at many functions around Minnesota from family reunions to church gatherings, and all types of picnics. I would add 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning (omit the seasoned salt) and a can of rinsed black beans to the base mixture. It’s that time of year to start the hot dishes, and our families’ favorite is a vegan spin on a classic, the Vegan Tater Tot Hotdish! One option for a different flavor to this recipe would be to make this Tex-Mex style. I have a link below at the end of the recipe for my Amazon store. I use my favorite Spike seasoning which can be hard to find at some stores so you can do what I do and buy it on Amazon. This entire casserole would freeze well before and after it’s baked so if you want to make it in advance, you certainly could. I use a fork to mash it into crumbles as I’m cooking it. Make sure to defrost the vegan meat you’ll be using the night before in the fridge so it’s easier to cook. You could use cooked lentils as a meat substitute and I bet that would be equally as delicious. Last is adding the tots, baking then about 10 minutes before it’s done, you’ll add another layer of cheesy goodness to the top. I know some people don’t like the fatty faux meats so if using a drier brand you can add a little more vegan butter to make up for it. This is where the juiciness of the meat comes into play as it makes a sauce with the cheese. You’re basically going to sauté some veggies, then sauté the mock meat and finally add vegan cheese. They’re darn cute but feel free to use standard sized tots! I decided to use mini tater tots for my casserole and only for the simple reason that they’re smaller and will make the casserole easier to serve. You can certainly use all burger meat and it will still be delicious. I also like using half vegan sausage and half burgers as it adds more flavor. If you don’t, your end result could wind up dry. First, you should use a fatty vegan burger. This is a simple recipe but there are few ingredients that make all the difference between hot or not tots. Now tots are perfectly fine to eat just on their own but we’ve been making a cheesy casserole out of them for years and once you’ve had them this way, you might just never go back to plain Jane tots! February 2 is national tater tot day! It’s also Groundhog Day so this will get you through the rest of the winter hopefully. ![]()
